Newsletter from July 2011

Hello Friends!

I hope everyone is doing well and keeping cool this summer! I know it's been a while since you've heard from me and I wanted to send out a mailing with some news.

St Martin's Press won't be publishing any more of the Cin Craven series. The books got great reviews (and I heartily and humbly thank all the readers and bloggers who took their time and energy to write them), but sales were not what we'd all hoped for. In fact, my agent advised me that if I wanted to continue writing, I would need not only a new idea but a new pen name as well. As you can imagine, that was more than a little depressing! I wasn't even sure I wanted to continue writing at that point, but I've had such an outpouring of support from my wonderful readers that I can't just abandon Cin and her story. I'm now looking forward to finishing the series the way I want to write it and putting the novels out as independent releases. I expect to do this mostly through ebooks, but I will make the novels available in print editions as well. Print-on-demand books are incredibly expensive to produce, but I promise I will do my best to find a self-publisher with the best pricing and distribution options for you! If you have an e-reader, though, you won't see any increase in price without a publishing house behind me. I am hoping to get the next novel out around Christmas. I know it's been a long time between books but, to be honest with you, I believe that if you're going to do something, you do your very best and I didn't feel that I could do that until recently. Certain events just sucked all the joy out of writing for me and I was so burned out for a while that Cin stopped talking to me entirely. I'm trying very hard to get things back on track for you, though, and I want all of you who have emailed me or posted on Facebook to know how much your support means to me. I really loved writing these books and I'm looking forward to writing more for you!

In the meantime, if you haven't had the opportunity to read the two short stories from the Mammoth anthologies, they are now available for download as single stories on ebook. Right now you can find them on Smashwords.com but they should be available at your favorite ebook website any day now. If you've already read the Mammoth anthologies, then there isn't anything new in these editions. I retained the rights for these stories and they're simply reprints.

“The Eternal Warrior” from the Mammoth Book of Irish Romance can be found here:
http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/73955

“The Righteous” from the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance can be found here:
http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/71459

Also, for those of you who waited so patiently for Bound by Sin to come out on Kindle, I just noticed that it's finally available! I don't know why that took so long and it's completely inexcusable, but there was some sort of miscommunication between Amazon and the publisher which I had no control over. My editor was aware that it didn't come out on Kindle when the print version came out, and beyond that there was nothing I could do about it. My apologies to all my Kindle readers!!

I've added a Twitter account to my social media sites, but I confess I don't really "get" Twitter, so I rarely use it. The best way to keep in touch with me is through Facebook. I post pretty much on a daily basis there and we have a lot of fun!

Thank you again to all of you for your support. I hope you all have a wonderful summer (don't forget the sunscreen) and I wish you the very best!
Jenna

  1. I am glad that you are still alive and still writing stories. I was so worried. I can't wait to read more about Cin. I really enjoyed myself. I'm also sure I will find a way to get the printed versions of your new books in the Netherlands. So happy the story will be continued. Greetings Sandra

  3. First, sorry for my bad english. But even if I can't write, I can read english. And so did I.
Your "dark sin" was translated in french, and that's how I met your Righteous. After reading all Cin Craven Novels in english - and hope one day in french! - I enjoy to know her adventure will continue. As would say Justine " Bon courage et tenez bon!"

  4. Thank you, Iris! It still sort of blows my mind that my books are sold in foreign countries. I had a lovely email from a French fan just last month! I'm so glad you've enjoyed the books and I hope you continue to do so. (Welcome to my Facebook page, also, by the way!)

    Best wishes,

  7. Your publisher should have done a better job for you. Paranormal romance is big right now and Cin & The Righteous are great characters. Your books are different, exciting and thoroughly enjoyable. I can't wait for the next one. I too enjoy writing and understand that you just can't turn on the flow when you want to. When it's right, the words will flow.

  8. It is a smart move to go the eBook route. I really like the Cin Craven series and look forward to reading more!

  9. I've really enjoyed the Cin Craven series, and will definitely support you if you go the independent route.Sounds to me as if your publisher was out of touch with what readers want. Please continue writing. Your characters are wonderful.

  13. I can not believe that they don't want to publish anymore Cin books! I read several series and I have to say that your books have become my favorite. I look forward to more of them no matter what venue I have to purchase them through.

  14. I brought up the Kindle situation with your last book just today. We have no way of knowing if those sales would have had an effect, but it still annoys me on your behalf that they seriously were dragging their feat on that.

  15. I cruse by the section your series is in every time I'm in my favorite book store and after not seeing any more for the longest time I had to come see what was up. I can't believe the issues you've had when the books (and reviews) are so amazing. I love your series!! Can't wait to see the next book. ~Michelle from Florida

  16. I am so excited to know there will be more Cin novels soon. About a year ago (maybe two)I ended up reading the first three books in two days. I just loved them! I come by periodically to your site to see if there is any news. This has definitely made my night. =)

  17. I am also happy that the Cin adventure will continue and I can't believe that the sales werent as high as they expected maybe they should have advertise more. I know 6 family members who went out and purchased the series after reading part of mine. I will endeavour to be able to get a copy of the continuing story in publish format as I dont use an e-reader.

  18. I'm really glad you're going to finish the series. I've thoroughly enjoyed the Cin novels. I'm going to download the two shorts on smashwords right now.

  19. There is one easy way to publish books without you having to go out of pocket to get it done. Amazon's Createspace does it for you, and they simply take a cut from every book you sell. Hope this helps. The Cin books are amongst my very favorite. And I read about 200 books per year.

  20. I was just looking for the latest book and was afraid your publisher might have cut you loose. The "big 6" have been very shortsighted about a lot of things lately. Please, please, please look into both a new publisher and self-publishing as well. Some "smaller" electronic publishers (e-first but set up for print as well) would be another good place to look. I have always enjoyed quality books and heard good things about Samhain Publishing, and they recently expanded into the Horror line when Dorchester cut that long time horror line editor loose. And some big names started, and/or still publish with them! So they are willing to push the envelope. Take a page from Maya Banks book and be multi-level, multi published! I love The Righteous and want to read more about Cin as well as stories for spin off secondary characters. It is a wonderful and entertainng world you've built! Most of all wishing you happiness and inspiration!

  24. Just started reading your Cin books and came to find out why I was missing gaps in the story between the 2nd and 1st, now that I know I will have to look for the short stories. I love your work dont let them get you down your a wonderful writer and I cant wait for more.

    1. Sorry, Katie! I didn't really mean to do that. I wrote the Strange Brew story just before Grave Sins and it was always meant to be a stand-alone story. I never intended for Cin to have that dark magic but when I started writing Grave Sins I thought, "Oh! How fabulous would THAT be?!" So I kind of screwed y'all there, making you buy the anthology to see how that happened, but it was not intentional!

  26. Jenna, Please don't stop writing the next Cin & Michael book. I love that they are in love and the characters become more and more developed. Cin Craven is one of my favorite series (have probably read 300+ books now). Do check out Samhain publishing and also Ellora's Cave. I believe that Delilah Devlin and her sister Maya Banks started this site. I buy books from them all the time. Please don't forget your "NOOK" Epub fans so don't just focus on Kindle owners. Also you may want to get into the Yahoo Paranormal Group. That's a great way to develop new readers as they put out a blast every day. So does Coffeetimeromance.com.

  27. Jenna, Please don't stop writing the Cin Craven series. I love that they are a couple and in love. I like how you've developed the characters and I've read at least 300 paranormal books. Samhain is a great publisher and I've purchased books from them. You should also check out Ellora's Cave. I believe Delilah Devlin and Maya Banks developed this site for writers. You could also develop your base by joining the Yahoo Paranormal Group (they even have a writers section). They put out a blast every day. Also coffeetimeromance.com has several publishers listed. Don't forget your NOOK readers (B&N) and the Epub format. Keep us all informed as to how you're progressing! Just bought you two shorts!

    1. I will make sure you NOOK users have access, don't worry! I was pretty happy with Smashwords on the two short stories, but they can't seem to get their act together and get a deal with Amazon. Those two still aren't online in the Kindle store. However it ends up, I promise it'll be easily accessible on ebook! Thank you for the tips!

  30. Dear Jenna,
Just so you know, this is the first on-line review I have ever written. However, this situation moved me to write. I found the first Cin Craven novel and promptly rushed out to get the rest! I am so sorry you publisher isn't more supportive, they are just stupid and short-sighted. I will say I didn't think they did a good job w/ the cover art...somehow it didn't advertise well what kind of novel was inside. I was at a Con last year in a panel on cover art and the panel said that the paranormal romance trademark cover art is a back view of a woman, usually in some sort of corset or gown off her sholders. LOL Haven't we all seen this soooo many times! Maybe if they had turned Cin around sales would have gone up! But seriously, I am very happy you are writing again and looking into ways to self-publish. Oh, and BTW, I live about 30 miles south of NGCSU, so know your Georgia fans are out there and rooting for you! Well...guess I will have to finally join the 21st century and get an e-reader. Best Wishes for a productive spring.

    1. Thank you! I do agree with you on the covers. The first one was the only one I liked. I thought they hit that one pretty spot-on, even though I imagine Cin much softer and more delicate in her features. I would have liked to have seen her in outfits that reflected the time period of each book on the covers, but I guess I'm just glad they didn't put tattoos on her, which seems to be what says "UF" to readers. They kept wanting to modernize her clothes because "historical paranormals don't sell." Needless to say, we went round and round over every cover!

  31. They really need to leave you alone and let you do your own thing. can't wait for the next Cin Craven book I love the Righteous and Cin is awesome !! You write wonderfully and as for me if i read a book and don't skip pages or go right to the end it's a great book and believe me i've read a lot of books.

  32. Jenna,

I think that you are a great writer. I am new to the Cin books, and I have to admit that I was drawn in the moment that I started the series. I have now read the books published so far twice and wait patiently for the next one to appear. In Bound By Sin you add an excerpt of Mortal Sins, I was wondering if it has already been published, or if it was the one you are waiting to publish next? Don't let anyone get you down, you are a great writer and deserve the best. Catherine

  33. I started your Cin series a few weeks ago and have read everything including the short prequels. I love the series and i hope you find what your looking for in the publishing world so you can continue to share your characters with us. I dont know why the premise of damaged with a heart of gold is so appealing to women these days but we cant seem to get enough. Looking forward to the story of the righteous continuing.

  34. It certainly is our pleasure to include the Cin Craven series to our ever growing reading order lists. We will definitely be "Spotlighting" this series in the near future. More readers need to find this and enjoy it as much as our contributors! Congrats on a wonderful series!

Your books are truly wonderful to read!
I overall are overjoyed that you didn't quit writting the Cin Craven series.

I wish everything solves itself for you. You deserve better!

  39. I love your books! I am recommending them to a friend and wanted to ensure she reads them in order including the short stories as I feel they are critical to the ongoing storyline of the characters. Why is Sin Slayer from the book Huntress not on smashwords? The is one of your best stories and so necesary to read before reading Grave Sins. Like all your fans, please don't stop writing about Cin and the Righteous.

  40. I discovered that I left off one of the short stories "Dark Sins" fromm the book Strange Brew. I downloaded the first two short stories from Smashwords and requested they add both Sin Slayer and Dark Sins to their library. If you are a Cin Craven fan, be sure to check the booklist to read the stories in order.

  42. Jenna I really miss reading about Cin's latest adventure. I've been reading your stories from way back when Wages of Sin had the original cover with the old building on the front, and it was an ebook off Lulu. I really hope your still planning on continuing the series. I know there are a lot of these historical vampire adventure romances around but yours is truly original and so much more intersting. As a reader you really are kept guessing what will happen next. Please don't give up! Bea x

I was just checking in to see how your process was going and if any more books were in the works, either on the self publishing route or the e-publishing route. I would love to read more about the Righteous.
